Comfort & Not Alone

Every Tear Is Kept

Psalm 56:8

Lord, the tears I cried alone — You saw every one. You keep count of my tossings; You hold what I could not say. Thank You that nothing of mine is lost with You. Amen.

The Scripture

“You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in Your bottle.”

— Psalm 56:8

About this verse

Psalm 56 carries a heading tying it to David's flight from Saul, seized by Philistines in Gath while running for his life with nowhere safe to land. Verse 8 is startling in its intimacy: David pictures God counting his 'tossings' — the restless turning of a sleepless, frightened night — and collecting his tears in a bottle, as if grief that specific and that private is worth keeping. In a culture where mourners' tears were sometimes literally caught in small flasks as a record of loss, the image says nothing you cry is wasted or unseen. This is a prayer for the crying that happens with no one else in the room, when you need to know it still mattered to someone.
