Comfort & Not Alone

Five Loaves and Two Fish

Mark 6:41-44

Mark 6:41-44 is the moment Jesus feeds the five thousand. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, Jesus spoke a blessing and broke the loaves. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish.

Lord Jesus, You took five loaves and two fish, looked up to heaven, and spoke a blessing. They all ate and were satisfied. I bring You the little I have today. Bless it, and let it feed more than I could imagine. Amen.

The Scripture

“Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, Jesus spoke a blessing and broke the loaves. Then He gave them to His disciples to set before the people. And He divided the two fish among them all. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. And there were five thousand men who had eaten the loaves.”

About this verse

Earlier in Mark 6, the apostles return from their mission and Jesus takes them away by boat to rest, but the crowds run ahead on foot. When He lands, He has compassion on them because they are like sheep without a shepherd, and He teaches them many things. As the day ends, the disciples want to send the people away to buy food, but Jesus tells them, “You give them something to eat.” All they can find is five loaves and two fish. Jesus has the people sit down in groups on the green grass. Then He takes what they have, looks up to heaven, blesses it, breaks the loaves, and gives them to His disciples to set before the people. Everyone eats and is satisfied, twelve baskets of leftovers are gathered, and five thousand men have eaten. It is a prayer for anyone who feels that what they have is too little, and who wants to place it in His hands.
