Healing

Everyone Got the Day Off. You Didn't.

Mark 6:31

Lord, the whole country took today off and I am still going. The messages keep coming, the shift still has to be covered, and even when I sit down my head is still working. I have made stopping feel like quitting, so I never stop, and I am tired in a way that sleep is not fixing. You never once told Your friends to push through. You looked at them, worn out and with no time even to eat, and You took them away in a boat. Do that with me. Untie what I keep knotted. Take me out far enough that the noise on the shore gets small. Teach me that the work will still be there tomorrow and that You will still be holding it tonight. Let me rest a while. Amen.

The Scripture

“Come with Me privately to a solitary place, and let us rest for a while.”

— Mark 6:31

About this verse

The disciples had just come back from their first mission, and the crowds around Jesus were so heavy that Mark says they did not even have time to eat. Jesus' answer was not a pep talk. He said, "Come with Me privately to a solitary place, and let us rest for a while," and they went away in a boat. Notice the "us." He did not send them off to recover so they could get back to work; He went along. And the plan did not go smoothly. People saw them leaving and ran ahead on foot, so the crowd was waiting when the boat landed. Jesus had compassion on them and went on to feed the five thousand, yet the invitation to rest still stands in the text, never taken back. Some tiredness is not fixed by a night's sleep, because the mind never actually leaves the shore. This passage is a call to put real distance between you and the noise, even for a while, and to trust that the work will still be held while you are gone.
