The Bible story
Jesus Carries the Cross
After Pilate handed Him over, the soldiers put a crown of thorns on Jesus and led Him out to be crucified. He carried His cross toward Golgotha, and a man named Simon of Cyrene was made to carry it behind Him. A large crowd followed, among them women who mourned for Him.
Carrying His own cross, He went out to The Place of the Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha.
— John 19:17 (BSB)
The woman offering a cloth comes from church tradition, not from the Gospels.
