Prayer Points for the Month of February

These prayer points for the month of February are written for individuals, couples, families, prayer meetings and churches. The month brings Valentine’s Day, the longest-feeling stretch of winter, and in some years the start of Lent, so the points pray about God’s love for us, marriages and those who are single, friendship and the lonely, endurance through the cold months, and hearts turning toward the cross. Each prayer comes with the verse it prays.

This is how God’s love was revealed among us: God sent His one and only Son into the world, so that we might live through Him. And love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as the atoning sacrifice for our sins.

Take a section each week of February, or a point each day. Couples can pray the marriage section together on Valentine’s Day. In a group, read the verse, pray the prayer as one, then give everyone a minute to name friends and family before God, especially anyone who is lonely this month.

God’s love for us

  1. 1Loved with an everlasting love

LORD, before anyone gives or receives a card this month, we remember that You have loved us with an everlasting love and drawn us with loving devotion. Let Your love, not anyone’s attention or approval, be the ground we stand on.

The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have drawn you with loving devotion.

    Jeremiah 31:3 (BSB)
  2. 2Alive by grace because of His great love

God, rich in mercy, because of Your great love You made us alive with Christ when we were dead in our trespasses. We did nothing to earn it. It is by grace we have been saved, and we thank You with our whole hearts.

But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in our trespasses. It is by grace you have been saved!

    Ephesians 2:4-5 (BSB)
  3. 3He rejoices over us

LORD our God, You are among us, mighty to save. It is hard to believe that You rejoice over Your people with gladness and quiet them with Your love. Quiet our anxious hearts this week, and help us rest in Your delight.

The LORD your God is among you; He is mighty to save. He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you with His love; He will rejoice over you with singing.”

  4. 4Love poured into our hearts

Father, thank You that hope in You does not disappoint, because You have poured out Your love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. Where our love for others has run dry, fill us again from Yours.

And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us.

    Romans 5:5 (BSB)

Marriages and singles

  1. 5Love that does not give up

Lord, love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things and endures all things. Give husbands and wives a love that keeps choosing each other through ordinary weeks and hard seasons. Where hope in a marriage has grown thin, renew it.

It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

  2. 6Catching the little foxes

Lord, guard our marriages from the little foxes that ruin the vineyard: careless words, screens at the dinner table, small resentments left unspoken. Help couples catch them early, apologize quickly and keep their love in bloom.

Catch for us the foxes—the little foxes that ruin the vineyards—for our vineyards are in bloom.

    Song of Songs 2:15 (BSB)
  3. 7Pleasant words at home

Father, pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. Fill our homes with them: thank you, I am sorry, I am proud of you, I love you. Let spouses speak to each other more gently than to anyone else.

Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

    Proverbs 16:24 (BSB)
  4. 8Marriages under strain

Lord Jesus, You said that what God has joined together, no one should separate. We lift up marriages that are struggling, hurting or near the end. Bring humility, honest help and wise counsel, and keep every spouse and child safe.

Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”

    Mark 10:9 (BSB)
  5. 9Single and whole in Christ

LORD, You are our portion. For those who are single this Valentine’s season, whether by choice, by loss or while they wait, be their portion and their hope. Guard them from loneliness and comparison, and let our church be a family to them.

“The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in Him.”

    Lamentations 3:24 (BSB)

Friendship and the lonely

  1. 10Jesus calls us friends

Lord Jesus, You no longer call us servants but friends, and You have made known to us what You heard from the Father. Thank You for Your friendship. Teach us to be friends to others the way You have been a friend to us.

No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not understand what his master is doing. But I have called you friends, because everything I have learned from My Father I have made known to you.

    John 15:15 (BSB)
  2. 11A friend at all times

Father, a friend loves at all times. Thank You for the friends who stood by us in hard years. Show us whom to call, text or visit this week, and make us faithful friends, not only when it is easy.

A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

Proverbs 17:17 (BSB) · Pray this verse →
  3. 12Iron sharpening iron

Lord, as iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. Give the men and women of our church honest Christian friendships: people who pray with them, tell them the truth and keep them close to Jesus.

As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.

    Proverbs 27:17 (BSB)
  4. 13When we feel alone

LORD, the psalmist asked You to turn and be gracious, because he was lonely and afflicted. We pray that for widows and widowers, the newly divorced, students far from home and the elderly who rarely get a visitor. Turn to them, and send us too.

Turn to me and be gracious, for I am lonely and afflicted.

    Psalm 25:16 (BSB)
  5. 14Weeping and rejoicing together

Lord, help us rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep. When one friend gets engaged and another grieves an empty house, give us hearts big enough for both, and words that fit each one.

Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.

    Romans 12:15 (BSB)

Endurance through the winter

  1. 15The God of snow and frost

LORD, You spread the snow like wool and scatter the frost like ashes, and when You send out Your word, the ice melts and the waters flow. You rule the winter. Melt what has grown cold in us, and help us trust You through the gray weeks.

He spreads the snow like wool; He scatters the frost like ashes; He casts forth His hail like pebbles. Who can withstand His icy blast? He sends forth His word and melts them; He unleashes His winds, and the waters flow.

    Psalm 147:16-18 (BSB)
  2. 16Strength for weak knees

Father, many of us are tired this month: January’s energy is gone and spring feels far away. Strengthen our limp hands and weak knees. Help us make straight paths for our feet, so that those walking behind us are helped and not hindered.

Therefore strengthen your limp hands and weak knees. Make straight paths for your feet, so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.

    Hebrews 12:12-13 (BSB)
  3. 17God’s love and Christ’s perseverance

Lord, direct our hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance. When we want to give up a habit of prayer, a hard job or a ministry that feels unseen, remind us how Jesus endured for us, and give us His steady strength.

May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance.

    2 Thessalonians 3:5 (BSB)
  4. 18Winter does not last forever

God of every season, the winter passes and the flowers appear. For those in a long winter of grief, illness or waiting, give a sure hope that the season of singing will come, and keep them company until it does.

For now the winter is past; the rain is over and gone. The flowers have appeared in the countryside; the season of singing has come, and the cooing of turtledoves is heard in our land.

When Lent begins

  1. 19Seeking the Lord while He may be found

LORD, as Lent begins for many churches, we want to seek You while You may be found and call on You while You are near. We turn from our own ways back to You, because You have compassion and freely pardon.

Seek the LORD while He may be found; call on Him while He is near. Let the wicked man forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the LORD, that He may have compassion, and to our God, for He will freely pardon.

    Isaiah 55:6-7 (BSB)
  2. 20Examining our ways

Lord, help us examine and test our ways honestly in these weeks before Easter. Show us the habits, words and attitudes that have pulled us away, and give us grace to turn back to You, not in shame but in hope.

Let us examine and test our ways, and turn back to the LORD.

    Lamentations 3:40 (BSB)
  3. 21Taking up the cross daily

Lord Jesus, You said that whoever wants to come after You must deny himself, take up his cross daily and follow You. Whether or not we give something up this season, teach us daily, quiet obedience on the road that leads to Easter.

Then Jesus said to all of them, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me.

    Luke 9:23 (BSB)

A closing prayer

God of love, thank You that You loved us first and sent Your Son as the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Fill our marriages with patience, our friendships with faithfulness, and our church with welcome for everyone who feels alone. Strengthen us through the last of the winter, and as Lent begins, turn our hearts toward the cross and the empty tomb. Let Your love be what others see in us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Questions

What should we pray about in February?

February is a natural month to pray about love: God’s love for us in Christ (1 John 4:9-10), marriages around Valentine’s Day on February 14, friendships, and the lonely. Late winter is also a good time to pray for endurance, and when Lent begins, many Christians use the weeks before Easter for repentance and prayer.

When does Lent begin?

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, forty days before Easter not counting Sundays. Because the date of Easter moves, Ash Wednesday can fall anywhere from early February to early March. Not every evangelical church observes Lent; those that do often use it as a season of repentance, fasting and preparing for Easter.

How can couples pray together on Valentine’s Day?

Keep it short and honest. Read one verse, such as 1 Corinthians 13:7, then let each spouse thank God for one thing about the other and ask His help in one area of the marriage. Close by praying for couples you know who are struggling. The marriages section on this page has four prayers ready to use.
