A Prayer for My Husband

Psalm 1:1-3

Psalm 1, which names no author, opens the whole Book of Psalms with a picture of the blessed man: he turns from the counsel of the wicked, delights in the law of the LORD, and grows like a tree planted by streams of water.

Lord, I lift my husband up to You. Make him like a tree planted by streams of water, rooted deep in You. Keep him from the counsel of the wicked and the seat of mockers. Give him delight in Your word, day and night. In dry seasons, keep his leaf from withering, and let his life bear good fruit for our home and for everyone who depends on him. Amen.

The Scripture

“Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, or set foot on the path of sinners, or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the Law of the LORD, and on His law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, yielding its fruit in season, whose leaf does not wither, and who prospers in all he does.”

Prayer points from Psalm 1:1-3

  1. Thank God for your husband by name, and for one good thing you see in him.
  2. Ask God to give him delight in His word and time to think on it.
  3. Pray that he would be kept from the counsel of the wicked and the voices of mockers.
  4. Ask the Lord to root him deeply, so that he stays steady in dry seasons.
  5. Pray for good fruit from his life: in his work, his friendships and your home.
  6. Ask the LORD to guard his path, and yours beside him.

About this verse

Psalm 1 sets two ways of life side by side. The blessed man does not walk with the wicked, stand on the path of sinners or sit with mockers; instead, “his delight is in the Law of the LORD, and on His law he meditates day and night.” Then comes this picture: “He is like a tree planted by streams of water, yielding its fruit in season, whose leaf does not wither.” A tree like that stays green in a dry summer because its roots reach water. The psalm closes by setting this life against chaff blown away by the wind, and it gives the reason for the difference: “the LORD guards the path of the righteous.” That is why these verses make a good prayer for a husband. It does not ask God for a perfect man, but for a man rooted in Him, steady in dry seasons and fruitful for the people who depend on him. This prayer is for any wife who wants to bless her husband before God, in easy days or hard ones.
