Peace & Rest

The Seat Beside You Was Never Empty

Hebrews 13:5

Jesus, I've kept a place for people who never stayed, and the quiet beside me grew so heavy. Thank You that I was never truly alone — that You have been here all along. Be near me now. Quiet my heart and let me rest in Your presence. You said You will never leave me; I am holding on to that. Amen.

The Scripture

“I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

— Hebrews 13:5

About this verse

Hebrews 13:5 is part of the letter's closing exhortations on contentment and trust, quoting God's own promise, echoed from passages like Deuteronomy and Joshua, that he will never leave or forsake his people. The original context addressed believers tempted to chase security through money or status; the writer roots real security instead in God's unwavering presence, not circumstances. The phrase 'never leave you nor forsake you' uses a strong double negative in the Greek, essentially 'never, no never, will I leave you' — an emphatic promise meant to be leaned on, not just admired. It speaks directly into loneliness by naming a presence that predates and outlasts every human relationship that has let someone down. This is a prayer for the ache of feeling forgotten or abandoned by people, and needing to know you were never truly alone.
