David wrote Psalm 23 as a shepherd-king who knew both pastures and battlefields, and verse 5 shifts the psalm's imagery from sheepfold to banquet table: 'You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.' This is not a table set after the threat is gone — it is set while the enemies are still watching, an image of God providing calm, abundance, and honor in the middle of real danger rather than only after it passes. In the ancient world, hosting an unprotected guest at a shared meal was itself an act of covenant protection. The cup overflowing signals more than enough, not mere survival. This is a prayer for finding peace and provision while conflict, threat, or opposition is still actively surrounding you.
