My Soul Finds Rest in God Alone

Psalm 62:1-12

Psalm 62 is a psalm of David in which, under attack from people who bless with their mouths but curse inwardly, he tells his own soul to rest in God alone.

O God, in You alone my soul finds rest; my salvation comes from You. You alone are my rock and my fortress, so I will not be shaken. When people threaten me, or money and status promise what they cannot give, bring me back to You. Here and now I pour out my heart before You. You are my refuge. Power belongs to You, and loving devotion too. Let my soul rest in You. Amen.

Psalm 62 is a psalm of David in which, under attack from people who bless with their mouths but curse inwardly, he tells his own soul to rest in God alone.

The Scripture

“For the choirmaster. According to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. In God alone my soul finds rest; my salvation comes from Him. He alone is my rock and my salvation. He is my fortress; I will never be shaken. How long will you threaten a man? Will all of you throw him down like a leaning wall or a tottering fence? They fully intend to cast him down from his lofty perch; they delight in lies; with their mouths they bless, but inwardly they curse. Selah Rest in God alone, O my soul, for my hope comes from Him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress; I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor rest on God, my strong rock; my refuge is in God. Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts before Him. God is our refuge. Selah Lowborn men are but a vapor; the exalted are but a lie. Weighed on the scale, they go up; together they are but a vapor. Place no trust in extortion or false hope in stolen goods. If your riches increase, do not set your heart upon them. God has spoken once; I have heard this twice: that power belongs to God, and loving devotion to You, O Lord. For You will repay each man according to his deeds.”

About this verse

David is under pressure in this psalm: people want to topple him “like a leaning wall,” and they “bless, but inwardly they curse.” Twice he says almost the same words: “In God alone my soul finds rest” (v. 1) and “Rest in God alone, O my soul” (v. 5). The first is a statement and the second a command to himself, as if he has to keep telling his own soul where rest is found. Then he turns to everyone: “Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts before Him.” He warns against trusting what will not hold, extortion and stolen goods, and even honest riches: “do not set your heart upon them.” The heading names Jeduthun, one of the temple musicians David appointed (1 Chronicles 25:1). This prayer is for anyone whose mind will not settle, and who needs to find rest in God rather than in people, money or control.
