New Year

A New Year Prayer

Revelation 21:5

Revelation 21:5 is from John’s vision of a new heaven and a new earth, where the One seated on the throne says, “Behold, I make all things new,” and tells John to write it down, because these words are faithful and true.

Lord, You sit on the throne and say, I make all things new. I bring You this new year: the hopes I have, the fears I carry, and the things I want to leave behind. Forgive what is past and make me new. Walk with me through every day of this year, and let me trust Your words, faithful and true. Amen.

About this verse

Near the end of the Bible, John sees “a new heaven and a new earth,” the holy city coming down from God, and hears that God will dwell with His people and wipe away every tear. Then the One seated on the throne speaks: “Behold, I make all things new.” He adds, “Write this down, for these words are faithful and true.” The promise looks ahead to the day God makes everything right, but it also shapes how Christians start over now. A new year is only a date on the calendar; it cannot make anyone new. God can. Paul writes, “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” So a New Year prayer does not need to be a list of resolutions. It can be handing the year to the One who makes things new, and trusting His word more than our plans. This prayer is for New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, or the first days of January.
