Dreading the Climb You Face Today?

Deuteronomy 31:8

Lord, tomorrow I have to walk into something I have been dreading, and I keep rehearsing it alone. Your Word says You go before me — that You are already there, already on the way back to meet me. Quiet the noise in me tonight. Let me start the climb knowing I am not the first one on those steps. Amen.

The Scripture

“The LORD Himself goes before you.”

— Deuteronomy 31:8

About this verse

At the end of Deuteronomy, Moses is a hundred and twenty years old and has been told he will not cross the Jordan. So he calls Joshua and, in front of all Israel, tells him to be strong and courageous, then adds the promise of verse 8: “The LORD Himself goes before you; He will be with you. He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid or discouraged.” Joshua was no stranger to courage. Forty years earlier he had been one of only two spies who urged Israel to trust God and enter the land. Yet he still needed to hear do not be afraid, publicly and by name, on the eve of taking over. The promise works in two directions at once: God is ahead of him, already in the place he dreads, and God is with him, walking beside him on the way. This prayer is for the night before something you have been dreading, when you keep rehearsing it alone and need to know someone has already gone up those steps.
