This Is My Beloved Son

Mark 9:2-7

Mark 9:2-7 is the Transfiguration. After six days Jesus took with Him Peter, James, and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There He was transfigured before them. His clothes became radiantly white, brighter than any launderer on earth could bleach them. Then a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is My beloved Son. Listen to Him!”

Father, on the mountain You spoke from the cloud about Jesus: “This is My beloved Son. Listen to Him!” When I am afraid and do not know what to say, quiet my heart. Help me listen to Him today. Amen.

The Scripture

“After six days Jesus took with Him Peter, James, and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There He was transfigured before them. His clothes became radiantly white, brighter than any launderer on earth could bleach them. And Elijah and Moses appeared before them, talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” For they were all so terrified that Peter did not know what else to say. Then a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is My beloved Son. Listen to Him!””

About this verse

Six days earlier, near Caesarea Philippi, Peter has confessed that Jesus is the Christ, and Jesus has begun to teach that He must suffer, be killed, and rise again. He has also said that some standing there would see the kingdom of God arrive with power. Now He takes Peter, James, and John up a high mountain by themselves. There He is transfigured before them, and His clothes become radiantly white. Elijah and Moses appear and talk with Him. Peter is so terrified that he does not know what else to say, so he offers to put up three shelters. Then a cloud covers them, and the Father speaks from the cloud: this is His beloved Son, listen to Him. Suddenly, when they look around, they see no one with them except Jesus. It is a prayer for anyone who is afraid, does not know what to say, and needs to stop and listen to Jesus.
