This world clock shows the current time in every US time zone and in 28 countries, on a globe of the Earth that shows where the sun is up and where it is night.
Six time zones cover the 50 states. From March to November most of the country is on daylight saving time, an hour ahead of standard time; the "Now" column is live.
| Time zone | Standard / daylight | Main cities | Now |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eastern (ET) | EST UTC−5 / EDT UTC−4 | New York, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Miami, Boston, Detroit | — |
| Central (CT) | CST UTC−6 / CDT UTC−5 | Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Nashville, Minneapolis, New Orleans | — |
| Mountain (MT) | MST UTC−7 / MDT UTC−6 | Denver, Salt Lake City, Albuquerque, Boise; Phoenix stays on MST | — |
| Pacific (PT) | PST UTC−8 / PDT UTC−7 | Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Las Vegas, Portland | — |
| Alaska (AKT) | AKST UTC−9 / AKDT UTC−8 | Anchorage, Juneau, Fairbanks | — |
| Hawaii (HST) | HST UTC−10, all year | Honolulu and all of Hawaii | — |
Six time zones cover the 50 states: Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific, Alaska and Hawaii-Aleutian. With the territories there are nine: Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands keep Atlantic time, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands keep Chamorro time, and American Samoa keeps Samoa time.
Daylight saving time starts at 2:00 a.m. local time on the second Sunday in March, when clocks go forward an hour, and ends at 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday in November, when they go back. Hawaii and most of Arizona stay on standard time all year; the Navajo Nation in Arizona does change its clocks.
Jerusalem is usually 7 hours ahead of New York. For a few weeks in spring and autumn it is 6 hours ahead, because Israel and the United States change their clocks on different dates. Israel keeps Israel Standard Time (UTC+2) and Israel Daylight Time (UTC+3) from late March to late October.
UTC, Coordinated Universal Time, is the standard every time zone is counted from, so New York is UTC−5 in winter and UTC−4 in summer. GMT, Greenwich Mean Time, is the same clock time as UTC; the United Kingdom keeps GMT in winter and British Summer Time (UTC+1) in summer.
The calendar day begins at the International Date Line in the Pacific and moves west around the world. When it is 8 p.m. on Monday in New York, it is already Tuesday morning in Beijing, Seoul and Tokyo, and late Tuesday morning in Sydney.
It works out where the sun is overhead for the moment shown, so the shaded half is the part of the world where the sun has set. Move the "See another hour" slider and you can watch the night roll west. The times come from your own browser's time zone rules, so daylight saving changes are applied on the right dates.
