Zacchaeus was a chief tax collector in Jericho, wealthy through a job Jews despised because collectors extorted their own people for the occupying Roman government. Too short to see over the crowd gathered around Jesus, he climbed a sycamore-fig tree just hoping for a glimpse — expecting nothing more than a distant look at a passing teacher. Instead Jesus stopped beneath the tree, looked up, and called him by name: 'Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.' The crowd grumbled that Jesus was going to a sinner's house, but Zacchaeus's encounter led to repentance and restitution on the spot. This is a prayer for anyone who expected only to watch from a distance and instead was personally sought out and named.
