Anxiety & Fear

Take Heart, He Has Overcome the World

John 16:33

Jesus said this to His disciples on the night before His crucifixion, closing His farewell teaching just before He prayed for them (John 16:33).

Lord, the fear keeps telling me it is all falling apart. But You already said You have overcome the world. Quiet my heart with that tonight — You are not worried, and You are holding me. Amen.

The Scripture

“In the world you will have tribulation. But take courage; I have overcome the world!”

— John 16:33

Prayer points from John 16:33

  1. Thank Jesus that He told His disciples the truth about trouble before it came.
  2. Name the trouble you are facing in this world right now, honestly and specifically.
  3. Confess the fear that keeps telling you it is all falling apart, and set His words against it.
  4. Ask for His peace in the middle of it, the peace He said is found in Him.
  5. Ask for courage to keep going, because He has already overcome the world.
  6. Pray by name for someone facing hardship for their faith, that they would take courage tonight.

About this verse

John 16 records Jesus's final extended teaching to his disciples the night before his crucifixion, preparing them for his departure and for the trouble they would soon face — his arrest, their scattering, and years of persecution ahead. He doesn't promise them an easy road: 'In the world you will have tribulation.' But he pairs that honesty with a declaration of victory already secured: 'take courage; I have overcome the world!' The confidence isn't that hardship will be avoided, but that it has already been outlasted by Christ before it even arrives for them. This is a prayer for facing real, ongoing trouble while still choosing courage over fear.
