In the days between Jesus' resurrection and his ascension, he instructs his disciples not to scatter and start ministry immediately, but to stay in Jerusalem and wait for 'the gift my Father promised' — the Holy Spirit, who would arrive at Pentecost with power to carry out the mission Jesus had given them. For disciples eager to act after everything they had witnessed, this was a hard instruction: sit still, don't move ahead of God's timing. Their obedience — gathering together in prayer rather than rushing out on their own strength — became the posture that preceded the church's birth. This is a prayer for the frustrating in-between, when you know what's coming but haven't received it yet, and the only faithful thing to do is wait well.
