The Mustard Seed

Mark 4:30-32

Mark 4:30-32 is Jesus' parable of the mustard seed: the kingdom of God “is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds sown upon the earth. But after it is planted, it grows to be the largest of all garden plants and puts forth great branches, so that the birds of the air nest in its shade.”

Lord Jesus, You said the kingdom of God is like a mustard seed, the smallest of all seeds. My faith feels small today. I plant it in Your hands anyway. Make it grow, Lord, until others can find rest in its shade. Amen.

About this verse

In Mark 4, the crowd beside the Sea of Galilee is so large that Jesus gets into a boat and teaches them from the water. He teaches in parables: the sower and the seed, the lamp on its stand, the seed that grows while the farmer sleeps. Then He asks, “To what can we compare the kingdom of God?” His answer is a mustard seed, the smallest of all the seeds sown upon the earth. Once planted, it grows to be the largest of all garden plants, with branches so great that the birds of the air nest in its shade. God’s kingdom often begins in ways that look small and easy to overlook, but it grows into something that gives shelter to many. It is a prayer for anyone whose faith, work or hope feels too small to matter.
