Comfort & Not Alone

The Heart On Fire For You

John 19:34

The Heart on fire for you. The Heart pierced on the cross for our sake — John nineteen — a fire that never burns out. Today, many Christians around the world begin nine days of prayer, remembering the Heart of Christ. He loves us with a love that consumes itself. Lord Jesus, gentle and humble of heart, make our hearts like Yours. Amen.

The Scripture

“One of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.”

— John 19:34

About this verse

This prayer draws on John 19:34, where a soldier pierces the crucified Jesus' side with a spear and blood and water flow out — a detail the Gospel writer records as eyewitness testimony to a real, physical death. In Catholic devotional tradition, that wounded side became the origin of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a symbol of His love poured out completely for humanity. Each June, many Catholics observe a nine-day novena, a devotional practice of praying the same intention daily for nine days, honoring that self-giving love and asking to be conformed to it. This is not a Bible verse recited alone but a devotional prayer built around it, in the tradition of prayers like the Saint Michael prayer. This is a prayer for beginning a season of focused devotion, asking that one's own heart be shaped by Christ's humility and love.
