God Works All Things Together for Good

Romans 8:28

Romans 8:28 says: “And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose.” Paul wrote it to the believers in Rome, in a chapter about suffering, the Spirit’s help and God’s love.

Father, I do not understand what is happening, and some of it hurts. I do not have to pretend it is good. But I believe You are at work in all things for the good of those who love You, and I love You, Lord. Take what I cannot fix and work in it. Make me more like Jesus through it, and let nothing separate me from Your love. Amen.

About this verse

Romans 8:28 is often quoted on its own, but it sits in the middle of a chapter that is honest about pain. Just before it, Paul writes that our present sufferings are not comparable to the glory that will be revealed, that the whole creation has been groaning, and that when we do not know how we ought to pray, the Spirit Himself intercedes for us. Then he says we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him. The verse does not say that everything that happens is good. It says God is at work in all of it. The next verse tells us what the good is: to be conformed to the image of His Son. And at the end of the chapter Paul names trouble, distress, persecution, famine and danger, and says that nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. It is a prayer for anyone who is hurting and needs to trust that God is still working.
