Hope & New Mornings

The God of Hope

Romans 15:13

Romans 15:13 says: “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Paul prays it for the believers in Rome near the end of his letter.

God of hope, fill me with all joy and peace as I believe in You. I have been running on empty, and my hope has worn thin. I cannot make it overflow on my own, so I ask for the power of Your Holy Spirit. Fill me until hope spills over into my home, my work, and the people who need it from me. Amen.

About this verse

Romans 15:13 is a blessing Paul prays for the church in Rome near the end of his long letter to them. Just before it, he urges the believers to accept one another, just as Christ accepted them, and he quotes several Old Testament lines about the nations praising God, ending with Isaiah’s promise that in the Root of Jesse the Gentiles will put their hope. A few verses earlier he has written that the Scriptures were written for our instruction, so that through endurance and encouragement we might have hope. Then he gathers it all into one prayer: may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. The hope is not something we work up. God is its source, believing receives it, and the Spirit makes it overflow. It is a prayer for anyone whose hope has run low.
