Comfort & Not Alone

Receive the Holy Spirit

John 20:22

Lectio Divina. Listen three times. Let one word speak to you. Jesus said, Receive the Holy Spirit. From John, chapter twenty. Hear it again. Receive the Holy Spirit. Once more, softly. Receive the Holy Spirit. What word did you hear? Sit with it. Take it into your day. Amen.

The Scripture

“Jesus said: Receive the Holy Spirit.”

— John 20:22

About this verse

John 20 records one of Jesus' first appearances to his disciples after the resurrection, in a locked room where they were hiding in fear. He shows them his wounded hands and side, breathes on them, and says simply, 'Receive the Holy Spirit' — an echo of God breathing life into Adam at creation, now a new kind of breath given for a new kind of life. It is a quiet, intimate moment, not a public spectacle, given to frightened men who had just watched their teacher die. This prayer uses the ancient practice of lectio divina — reading a short phrase of Scripture slowly, more than once, and sitting with whatever word or phrase rises to the surface rather than rushing to the next thing. It's for anyone who wants to actually listen in prayer, not just speak.
