Psalm 23 was written by David, the shepherd who became a king — a man who had walked through real valleys with real predators in the dark. The 'valley of the shadow of death' is not a poetic exaggeration: shepherds in Judea led their flocks through narrow ravines where light barely reached and danger could wait behind any rock. David's confidence is striking because of where he places it — not in the valley ending soon, but in the Shepherd walking through it beside him. The rod drove off wolves; the staff pulled wandering sheep back from the edge. This is a prayer for when the worst news has already arrived, and what you need is not an exit but a companion.
