Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

Psalm 139:14

Psalm 139:14 is David’s praise in a psalm about being fully known by God: the One who formed him in his mother’s womb made him fearfully and wonderfully.

Lord, I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. You formed my inmost being and knit me together in my mother’s womb; nothing about me was hidden from You. When I compare myself with others or wish I were someone else, remind me that Your works are marvelous, and I am one of them. Help me know this very well, and live today as someone You made with care. Amen.

Over a child

Lord, thank You for this child. You formed their inmost being and knit them together in the womb; they are fearfully and wonderfully made. Your eyes saw them before anyone else did, and all their days are written in Your book. Let them grow up knowing that Your works are marvelous, and that they are one of them. Amen.

About this verse

Psalm 139 is a psalm of David about being known completely. God knows when he sits and when he rises, knows his words before they are on his tongue, and is there in the heights and in the depths. Then, in verses 13–16, David goes back before his birth: “You knit me together in my mother’s womb.” Verse 14 is his response, and it is praise, not pride: “I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Marvelous are Your works, and I know this very well.” His worth comes from the care of the One who made him, and that is true of every person, the smallest baby included. Many parents pray this verse over a newborn, and over a child who is struggling to like who they are. This prayer is for anyone who needs to hear that they were made with care, and for parents praying over a child.
