A Prayer for My Son

Isaiah 54:13

Isaiah 54:13 is the LORD’s promise, spoken through the prophet Isaiah to His people, pictured as a barren woman and an afflicted city lashed by storms, that He will rebuild them and that all their sons will be taught by the LORD.

Lord, I bring my son to You. You know him even better than I do. Teach him Yourself: what is true, what is right, and how much You love him. When my words don’t reach him, let Yours reach him. Let him flourish, as You promise to the children You teach, and keep him close to You all his days. Amen.

The Scripture

Prayer points from Isaiah 54:13

  1. Thank God for your son by name and for who He made him to be.
  2. Ask the LORD to be his teacher, in the things you can teach him and the things you can’t.
  3. Pray that he would come to know God’s love for himself, not only through you.
  4. Ask God to establish him in righteousness and keep him far from oppression.
  5. Pray against fear in his life, and for a heart at peace.
  6. Ask for wisdom and patience for yourself as his parent.

About this verse

Isaiah 54 speaks to God’s people at a low point. They are pictured as a barren woman who has never had children and as an “afflicted city, lashed by storms, without solace.” God answers with promises: more children than she ever expected, a covenant of peace that “will not be broken,” and a city rebuilt with precious stones. Then comes this verse: “Then all your sons will be taught by the LORD, and great will be their prosperity.” The best thing promised for the children is not that they will be clever or successful, but that God Himself will be their teacher. The verses around it promise the whole city righteousness and freedom from fear. Parents can teach, guide and pray, but they cannot reach every part of a child’s heart. This verse hands that part to God. This prayer is for any mother or father praying for a son, whether he is a baby, a teenager or a grown man far from home.
