A Prayer for My Family

Joshua 24:15

Joshua 24:15 is Joshua’s challenge to all the tribes of Israel, gathered at Shechem when he was old, to choose that day whom they would serve, and his own answer for himself and his household.

Lord, I choose You again today. As for me and my house, we will serve You. Gather my family close to You. Where we have drifted, draw us back; where we are divided, make us one. Protect each person under this roof and each one far from it. Make our home a place where Your name is honored, kindness is ordinary, and love is easy to find. Amen.

Joshua 24:15 is Joshua’s challenge to all the tribes of Israel, gathered at Shechem when he was old, to choose that day whom they would serve, and his own answer for himself and his household.

The Scripture

“But if it is unpleasing in your sight to serve the LORD, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD!””

— Joshua 24:15

About this verse

When Joshua was old, he gathered all the tribes of Israel at Shechem. He retold their story as the LORD’s own words: how God took Abraham from beyond the Euphrates, brought the people out of Egypt, led them through the wilderness and gave them a land they had not worked for. Then he set a choice in front of them: serve the LORD, or the gods their fathers served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites around them. Before anyone answered, Joshua gave his own: “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD!” The people replied that they would serve the LORD too. Many Christian homes hang this verse by the front door, because it puts faith where daily life happens. And it begins with a choice someone in the house makes first, this day, not someday. This prayer is for anyone who wants to lead their family toward God, whatever shape that family is in right now.
