A Prayer for My Daughter

Luke 1:45

Luke 1:45 is what Elizabeth said to her relative Mary when Mary came to visit her, soon after the angel Gabriel had told Mary that she would bear a son, Jesus, who would be called the Son of God.

Lord, thank You for my daughter. As Elizabeth blessed Mary, I bless her today. Give her a heart that believes Your word and trusts that You will keep it, even when she can’t yet see how. Surround her with women of faith who will cheer her on. When she is afraid or unsure of herself, remind her that she is Yours, and let her be blessed in believing You. Amen.

The Scripture

“Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord’s word to her will be fulfilled.””

— Luke 1:45

Prayer points from Luke 1:45

  1. Thank God for your daughter by name.
  2. Ask God to give her a faith that believes His word will be fulfilled.
  3. Pray for women of faith in her life who will encourage her as Elizabeth encouraged Mary.
  4. Ask Him to quiet her fears and steady her when she is unsure of herself.
  5. Pray that she would know she is loved by God.
  6. Ask God to make you a voice of blessing in her life, not only of correction.

About this verse

The angel Gabriel told Mary, a virgin in Nazareth, that she would give birth to a son and call Him Jesus. He also told her that her relative Elizabeth had conceived a son in her old age. Mary answered, “I am the Lord’s servant,” and soon hurried to the hill country of Judah to see Elizabeth. As soon as Mary greeted her, Elizabeth’s baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was “filled with the Holy Spirit” and blessed her. She ended with this sentence: “Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord’s word to her will be fulfilled.” Mary had said yes to God before she could see how any of it would work out, and Elizabeth called that faith blessed. It is a picture of an older woman of faith speaking a blessing over a younger one. Many parents long for exactly this for their daughters: that they would trust God’s word, and that someone would be there to encourage that trust. This prayer is for any parent who wants to bless a daughter, at any age.
