Comfort & Not Alone

The Name Above Every Name

Philippians 2:10

Jesus, Yours is the Name above every name, at which every knee will bow. Be my peace and my strength today. Let me live to honor that Name with my life. Amen.

The Scripture

“At the name of Jesus every knee should bow.”

— Philippians 2:10

About this verse

Philippians 2 contains what many scholars believe is an early Christian hymn, quoted by Paul to describe Jesus' path from equality with God to taking on human form and dying on a cross — and then being exalted so that 'at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth.' Paul is writing from prison, urging a divided church toward humility by pointing to Christ's own humility. The name that was lowered furthest is the name now raised highest. Devotion to the 'Holy Name' of Jesus has a long history in Christian prayer as a source of comfort and protection, especially spoken in fear or in the dark. This is a prayer for moments when you need to remember that no other name, threat, or power outranks His.
