The Mountains Can Move

Isaiah 54:10

Lord, everything I leaned on is moving. But Your word stands: mountains may depart — Your steadfast love will not. Plant my feet on what cannot be shaken. Amen.

The Scripture

“The mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but My steadfast love shall not depart from you.”

— Isaiah 54:10

About this verse

Isaiah 54 is spoken to a people who had just watched everything solid come down — the city, the temple, the throne, the whole architecture of their security. God does not answer that by promising it will never happen again. He answers it with a comparison. Two verses earlier He has already invoked the flood: as He swore the waters would never again cover the earth, so He swears not to be angry with them. Then He goes further. He points at the mountains — the one thing in the ancient world that stood for permanence itself, the thing every metaphor for stability was built on — and says those can go. The hills can be removed. And His covenant of peace still will not be. It is not a promise that your life will stop shifting. It is a promise about what is left standing when it does. Notice, too, who the sentence lands on: 'shall not depart from you.' Singular. Personal. Not from the world in general — from you.
