Ask, Seek, Knock

Matthew 7:7-8

Matthew 7:7-8 is Jesus’ teaching on prayer from the Sermon on the Mount, spoken to His disciples with the crowds listening.

Father, Jesus told me to ask, to seek, and to knock, so I am here again. I ask You for what I need. I seek You when I can’t see the way. I knock on the door that seems shut. You are a good Father who gives good things to those who ask You. Give me patience to keep asking, and trust in Your answer. Amen.

Matthew 7:7-8 is Jesus’ teaching on prayer from the Sermon on the Mount, spoken to His disciples with the crowds listening.

The Scripture

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.”

— Matthew 7:7-8

About this verse

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gives three simple commands: ask, seek, knock. Each one comes with a promise, and verse 8 repeats them for everyone who asks, seeks and knocks. Then Jesus explains why we can pray this way. No father gives his son a stone when he asks for bread, or a snake when he asks for a fish. If imperfect parents know how to give good gifts to their children, “how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” The promise is not a blank check. It rests on a Father who is good and who knows what good gifts are. It invites us to keep coming, and to trust Him with the answer. This prayer is for anyone who has been praying for a long time, who is tempted to stop asking, or who needs a door to open.
