Faith & Doubt

Have Faith in God

Mark 11:22-24

Mark 11:24 says: “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Jesus said it in His last week in Jerusalem, after the disciples saw the fig tree He had cursed withered from its roots.

Lord Jesus, You said, “Have faith in God.” I bring You the mountain in front of me, and I ask You to move it. Help me pray boldly, with no doubt in my heart, trusting that You hear me. Teach me to ask for what You want, and to forgive anyone I hold something against, as You told Your disciples. I trust You with the answer. Amen.

The Scripture

““Have faith in God,” Jesus said to them. “Truly I tell you that if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and has no doubt in his heart but believes that it will happen, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”

Prayer points from Mark 11:22-24

  1. Fix your faith on God Himself, not on how strong your faith feels.
  2. Name the mountain in front of you.
  3. Ask boldly, and tell Him honestly where you doubt.
  4. Ask Him to shape what you ask by His will.
  5. Forgive by name anyone you hold something against.
  6. Thank Him that He hears you.

About this verse

Mark 11 takes place in Jerusalem in the last week before the cross. Jesus rides into the city, and the next day, on the way from Bethany, He finds a fig tree in leaf with no fruit and says no one will ever eat of its fruit again. Then He drives the buyers and sellers out of the temple courts, saying His house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations. The next morning the disciples see the fig tree withered from its roots. Jesus answers: Have faith in God. He speaks of a mountain thrown into the sea, and of praying with no doubt. In the very next verse He adds that when you stand to pray, you must forgive anyone you hold something against. Faith here rests on God, not on a formula. Later in Mark, in Gethsemane, Jesus Himself asks boldly and then prays, Yet not what I will, but what You will. It is a prayer for anyone who wants bolder faith in God.
