Immeasurably More

Ephesians 3:20-21

Ephesians 3:20 praises God, who “is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us.” It closes the prayer Paul writes for the believers in Ephesians 3.

Father, You are able to do immeasurably more than all I ask or imagine. My prayers are small, and my imagination runs out quickly. But Your power is at work in me. Root me deep in the love of Christ, and do in my life what I could never dream up. To You be the glory, in the church and in Christ Jesus, forever and ever. Amen.

About this verse

In Ephesians 3, Paul, who calls himself the prisoner of Christ Jesus, bows his knees before the Father and prays for the believers he is writing to. He asks that God would strengthen them with power through His Spirit in their inner being, so that Christ may dwell in their hearts through faith. He prays that, rooted and grounded in love, they would grasp the length and width and height and depth of the love of Christ, a love that surpasses knowledge. Then the prayer turns to praise: to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power at work within us, be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations. In its setting, this immeasurably more is tied to what Paul has just asked for: strength within, Christ in our hearts, and a love beyond knowing. It is a prayer for anyone whose prayers have grown small.
