Comfort & Not Alone

Loaves and Fishes

John 6:11-13

Jesus, all I have is small — not nearly enough. Take what little I bring, bless it, and make it more than I ever could. Amen.

The Scripture

“Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to them; and likewise of the fish, as much as they wanted. When they were filled, twelve baskets were gathered up.”

— John 6:11-13

About this verse

John 6 places this miracle on a hillside beside the Sea of Galilee, where a crowd of thousands had followed Jesus with no plan for a meal. A boy's small lunch — five barley loaves and two fish, the plain food of the poor — was all that could be found. John notes carefully that Jesus gave thanks over what little there was before distributing it, and that everyone ate as much as they wanted, with twelve baskets of scraps left over from a lunch that shouldn't have fed more than one family. The miracle isn't that God works with abundance; it's that he takes what's small and clearly insufficient and multiplies it in front of people's eyes. This prayer is for the moment your resources — time, energy, money, skill — feel too small for what's in front of you.
