Do Not Let Your Hearts Be Troubled

John 14:1

John 14:1 says: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe in Me as well.” Jesus said it to His disciples at the Last Supper, on the night He was betrayed.

Lord Jesus, on the night You were betrayed, You told Your friends, “Do not let your hearts be troubled.” My heart is troubled today. I believe in God; help me believe in You as well, and trust You with what I cannot see. You have gone to prepare a place for me, and You will not leave me alone. Quiet my heart, and keep me close to You. Amen.

About this verse

John 14 comes in the middle of Jesus’ last supper with His disciples. Jesus has been troubled in spirit and has said that one of them will betray Him. Judas has gone out into the night. Jesus has said He is going where they cannot follow yet, and He has told Peter that before the rooster crows, Peter will deny Him three times. Into that heavy room He says: Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe in Me as well. He tells them that in His Father’s house are many rooms, that He is going there to prepare a place for them, and that He will come back and welcome them, so that they may be where He is. Later the same evening He promises the Spirit of truth and says He will not leave them as orphans. He does not pretend trouble is not coming; He gives them Himself to hold on to. It is a prayer for anyone whose heart is troubled and who needs to trust Jesus with it.
