Comfort & Not Alone

Every Hair Numbered

Matthew 10:29-31

Jesus said this to His twelve disciples as He sent them out, after warning them they would face persecution (Matthew 10:5, 29-31).

Father, I have believed the lie that nobody counts someone like me. Thank You that You watch the sparrow the market sells for half a penny — and that not one of them falls alone. Thank You that You turned and counted the hairs of my head. Today I take my place among the counted. I am Yours, down to the last hair. Amen.

The Scripture

“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”

— Matthew 10:29-31

Prayer points from Matthew 10:29-31

  1. Thank your Father that not one sparrow falls to the ground apart from Him, and that you are worth more than many sparrows.
  2. Name the lie you have believed about being too small, too ordinary or too overlooked to count.
  3. Thank Him that even the hairs of your head are numbered, and that nothing about you escapes His notice.
  4. Tell Him what you are afraid of today, and ask Him to quiet that fear with the knowledge of His care.
  5. Ask for courage to do what He has sent you to do, even where you expect resistance.
  6. Pray by name for someone who feels worthless or forgotten, that they would know how much they are valued by God.

About this verse

Jesus spoke these words while sending out His twelve disciples, and the setting is not gentle: He has just told them they are going out like sheep among wolves and will be dragged before councils. Into that fear He points to the cheapest thing in the market. Sparrows were sold for food, two for a single small coin; Luke's version has five for two coins, adding that not one of them is forgotten by God. Not one falls to the ground apart from the will of your Father. Then Jesus moves from the bird to the listener, and the detail gets smaller still: even the hairs of your head are numbered. The conclusion is His, not ours to invent: “So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” The gospel song that takes its title from this passage carried that comfort to generations who were told they did not count. This prayer is for the day you have believed you are too small, too ordinary or too overlooked for God to notice.
