He Will Come Back

Acts 1:11

Lord Jesus, You were taken into heaven, and promised to come back the same way. While I wait and watch, keep my heart ready and my hope awake. Come, Lord Jesus. Amen.

The Scripture

“This same Jesus, taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go.”

— Acts 1:11

About this verse

Acts 1 opens with the risen Jesus lifted up into a cloud on the Mount of Olives while his disciples stand watching the sky. As they stare upward, two angels appear and ask why they are still looking up, promising that 'this same Jesus' will return in the same way they saw him go. It is a promise given at the exact moment of separation — not a vague hope, but a specific word to grieving, bewildered friends who had just watched their teacher leave. The disciples' response was not despair but obedience: they went and waited together in Jerusalem, as instructed. This is a prayer for the ache of waiting on a promise that hasn't been fulfilled yet, and choosing to stay hopeful and ready rather than staring at an empty sky.
