He Left the Ninety-Nine

Luke 15:5

Lord, I have wandered so far, and felt sure I was forgotten. Thank You that You did not wait for me to find my own way back — that You came looking for me Yourself, lifted me onto Your shoulders, and carried me home rejoicing. I am the one You came back for. Help me rest in being found. Amen.

The Scripture

“And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.”

— Luke 15:5

About this verse

Jesus told this parable to religious leaders who were scandalized that he ate with sinners. A shepherd with a hundred sheep loses one — and leaves the ninety-nine in open country to search until he finds it. The detail everyone in his audience would have caught: no sensible shepherd does this math. That is the point. When he finds the sheep, he does not scold it or make it walk home; he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing, and throws a party. Luke stacks this story with two more — a lost coin, a lost son — so no one could miss it: heaven celebrates the found, it does not shame them. This prayer is for anyone who has drifted far enough to believe they were forgotten.
