Anxiety & Fear

He Keeps Watch While You Sleep

Psalm 121:3-4

Lord, I keep trying to hold the night together myself. You promise You never slumber, that You keep watch over my life. Tonight I hand You the door, the worry, and the hours I can't count — and I rest, because You are awake. Amen.

The Scripture

“He will not let your foot be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber.”

— Psalm 121:3-4

About this verse

Psalm 121 is one of the 'Songs of Ascents,' sung by pilgrims climbing the road toward Jerusalem for festival worship — a journey through hill country where travelers were genuinely exposed to bandits, wild animals, and the danger of a twisted ankle on a dark path. The psalm opens by looking to the hills and asking where help will come from, then answers itself: from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Verses 3-4 promise that the God who keeps Israel 'will not slumber nor sleep' — a direct contrast to the ancient world's gods, who were often imagined as needing rest or being absent at night. This is a prayer for the hours when you are the only one awake and afraid, and you need to hand the watching over to someone who never has to close his eyes.
