Comfort & Not Alone

She Prayed Without a Sound

1 Samuel 1:13

Lord, there are things I cannot say aloud — only my lips move, and my heart aches before You. You heard Hannah's silent prayer. Hear mine too, and remember me. Amen.

The Scripture

“Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard.”

— 1 Samuel 1:13

About this verse

Hannah was married but childless in a culture that measured a woman's worth by motherhood, provoked year after year by a rival wife who had children. At the tabernacle in Shiloh she poured out her grief to God so intensely that only her lips moved and no sound came out — so much so that the priest Eli assumed she was drunk and rebuked her. She explained she was pouring out her soul in anguish, and Eli sent her away in peace. God remembered her, and she conceived Samuel, whom she gave back to the Lord's service. This is a prayer for grief too deep for words, prayed by someone who has been misunderstood in their pain.
