Comfort & Not Alone

Forty Days in the Wilderness

Mark 1:12-13

Mark 1:12-13 says: “At once the Spirit drove Jesus into the wilderness, and He was there for forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and the angels ministered to Him.” It comes right after Jesus is baptized.

Lord Jesus, You went into the wilderness for forty days, and You were tempted there. You know what it is to be tired, hungry and alone. Stay with me in my own wilderness. When I am tempted, give me Your strength, and send Your help the way You sent the angels to You. Amen.

The Scripture

“At once the Spirit drove Jesus into the wilderness, and He was there for forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and the angels ministered to Him.”

— Mark 1:12-13

Prayer points from Mark 1:12-13

  1. Thank Jesus that He went through the wilderness before you.
  2. Name the wilderness you are in right now.
  3. Tell Him honestly where you are being tempted.
  4. Ask Him for strength to stand firm.
  5. Ask Him to send help and care, as He did for Jesus.
  6. Thank Him that you are not alone, even in a dry place.

About this verse

Mark tells this part of Jesus' life in only two verses. Jesus has just been baptized in the Jordan, the heavens have torn open, and the voice from heaven has said, You are My beloved Son. Then, at once, the Spirit drives Him out into the wilderness. For forty days He is there, in a dry and empty place, being tempted by Satan. Mark does not list the temptations the way Matthew and Luke do. Instead he gives two short details. Jesus was with the wild animals, out where no one lives. And the angels ministered to Him, serving and caring for Him there. Right after this, Jesus begins to preach in Galilee. It is a prayer for anyone in a wilderness season, tired or tempted, who needs to know they are not left alone there.
