Then a Voice Said: Let There Be Light

Genesis 1:3

Father, You spoke light into the dark before the world began. Speak it over me now — into the places still empty and unformed. Let there be light. Amen.

The Scripture

“And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.”

— Genesis 1:3

About this verse

Genesis 1 opens with the earth 'formless and void,' covered in darkness, before God speaks the first words of creation: 'Let there be light.' Nothing forces this light into being — it comes purely because God speaks, establishing the pattern for the rest of the chapter, where each act of creation begins with his word. Ancient readers would have heard this as a claim that the God of Israel, not chaos or rival gods, brought order out of nothing. It is the Bible's founding picture of a God who speaks into emptiness and it becomes something. This is a prayer for starting over — for asking God to bring order, light, and beginning into a part of life that still feels shapeless and dark.
