You Keep Asking If You're Good Soil

Mark 4:8

Lord, I have spent so long afraid my heart was too hard, too shallow, too late to grow anything for You. Thank You that You did not stand back and grade me— You came out and sowed me Yourself. Make me the good soil You already see, and grow in me the harvest I could never force. Amen.

The Scripture

“Other seeds fell into good soil and produced grain — thirtyfold, sixtyfold, a hundredfold.”

— Mark 4:8

About this verse

Jesus tells this one from a boat, with the crowd pressed along the shore and, most likely, a real sower working a real hillside behind them. A first-century farmer broadcast seed by hand before plowing — walking the field and flinging it wide, over the footpath, over the rocky shelf, over the thorns, over the good ground alike. It looks wasteful. That is the point. The parable is usually preached as a soil test, and every honest listener leaves it wondering which kind of dirt they are. But notice what the story never says: it never says the soil made itself good, and it never shows the Sower stopping at the edge of a field to judge it. He goes out. He scatters everything He has, everywhere, on ground that has no way of proving itself first. And the yield when it lands — thirty, sixty, a hundredfold — is not the dirt's achievement. It is what the seed does. You are not being graded. You are being sown.
