At the Last Supper, Jesus tells Simon Peter that Satan has asked to 'sift' him like wheat, but that Jesus has already prayed for him — not that he would avoid failure, but that his faith would not fail completely, and that when he has turned back, he should strengthen the other disciples. Jesus says 'when,' not 'if,' fully aware Peter would deny him within hours. This is one of the most striking moments of foreknowledge and grace in the Gospels: Jesus interceding for someone before their worst failure, already planning for their restoration on the other side of it. Peter's later collapse and eventual return became central to the early church's understanding of grace after failure. This is a prayer for anyone bracing for or recovering from a moment they know they'll fall short.
