Comfort & Not Alone

That Is Why I Have Come

Mark 1:35-39

Jesus said this to Simon and his companions in Capernaum, the morning after the whole town had brought its sick to Him, when they found Him praying alone before dawn (Mark 1:35-39).

Lord Jesus, before the noise of this day begins, I come to You first. You knew what You were sent for; show me what today is for, and keep me close to You in it. Amen.

The Scripture

“Early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up and went out to a solitary place to pray. Simon and his companions went to look for Him, and when they found Him, they said, “Everyone is looking for You!” But Jesus answered, “Let us go on to the neighboring towns so I can preach there as well, for that is why I have come.” So He went throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.”

— Mark 1:35-39

Prayer points from Mark 1:35-39

  1. Come to Jesus first today, before the noise and the requests begin.
  2. Thank Him that He prayed in the dark after the hardest, busiest day, and that you can too.
  3. Ask Him to show you what today is actually for.
  4. Name the voices and expectations pulling at you, and ask for wisdom to know which ones to follow.
  5. Ask for the courage to move on when He moves on, even when people want you to stay.
  6. Pray for the people in the next place He is sending you, that they would hear the good news.

About this verse

The night before, the whole town of Capernaum had gathered at the door of Simon and Andrew's house, and Jesus had healed many and driven out many demons. Early the next morning, while it was still dark, He got up and went out to a solitary place to pray. It is the first time Mark shows Jesus praying, and he places it right after the busiest day so far. Simon and the others went looking for Him, and when they found Him they told Him that everyone was looking for Him. They seem to have expected Him to come back to the crowd that was waiting. Instead Jesus said they would go on to the neighboring towns so He could preach there as well, because that was why He had come. So He went throughout Galilee, preaching in the synagogues and driving out demons. This is a prayer for the start of a day, when you want to meet God before anyone needs you and let Him, not the pressure around you, set what the day is for.
