Our Nation

A Prayer for America

Psalm 33:12

Psalm 33:12 comes from a psalm with no named author that praises the LORD as Creator and Ruler of every nation and calls blessed the nation whose God is the LORD.

Lord, blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD. Thank You for America, for the freedoms we enjoy, and for all who have prayed for this land. Forgive our pride and our sins. Give our President, Congress, judges, governors and every leader wisdom, humility and integrity, whatever their party. Teach us justice and mercy, and revive Your church. No king is saved by his vast army, so we put our hope in You. Let Your loving devotion rest on us. Amen.

About this verse

Psalm 33 is a song of praise to the LORD, who made the heavens by His word and rules over every nation. The psalmist sings that “The LORD frustrates the plans of the nations” while “The counsel of the LORD stands forever.” Then comes verse 12: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people He has chosen as His inheritance!” The psalmist was speaking first of Israel, God’s chosen people, and America is not Israel. But the same psalm says the LORD looks on “all who inhabit the earth” and humbles every proud nation: “No king is saved by his vast army.” America marked 250 years of independence on July 4, 2026, and this psalm makes a fitting prayer at that milestone: thankful for freedoms we did not earn, honest about our sins, and putting our hope in the LORD rather than in our own strength. This prayer is for anyone praying for the United States and all its leaders, of every party.
