Morning

A Prayer for a Good Day

Psalm 90:14

Psalm 90:14 is from the psalm titled “A prayer of Moses the man of God,” in which Moses, after reflecting on how short human life is, asks God to satisfy His people each morning with His loving devotion.

Lord, this morning, before the day gets busy, satisfy me with Your loving devotion. Fill me with Your love first, so I don’t spend the day looking for it somewhere else. Give me a glad heart, patience with the people I meet and eyes to see Your goodness in small things. Let me sing for joy today, and be glad in You all my days. Amen.

About this verse

Psalm 90 is a prayer of Moses, and it begins with the eternal God: “Lord, You have been our dwelling place through all generations.” Against that, human life looks short, like new grass that springs up in the morning and withers by evening. So Moses asks God to “teach us to number our days, that we may present a heart of wisdom.” Then he asks for this: “Satisfy us in the morning with Your loving devotion, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.” A good day, in this psalm, does not begin with everything going right. It begins with being satisfied by God’s love before anything else happens, and that kind of gladness can last all our days. This prayer is for anyone starting the day who wants it to be a good one, in the deepest sense.
