Guardian Angel Prayer

Catholic Prayer

The Guardian Angel Prayer, Angel of God, is a traditional Catholic prayer that comes from the medieval Latin Angele Dei; it asks the guardian angel God has given to light, guard, rule and guide the one who prays, and it is often the first prayer Catholic children learn.

Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here, ever this day, be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

About this prayer

Angel of God is often the first prayer Catholic children learn. It comes from a Latin prayer of the Middle Ages, Angele Dei, and its English form rhymes so that it is easy to remember. The belief behind it rests on words of Jesus about children: “See that you do not look down on any of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of My Father in heaven.” A psalm says God “will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways,” and Hebrews calls angels “ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation.” In the second line, the angel’s care is God’s love at work: the prayer does not put the angel in God’s place. Catholic and Orthodox Christians speak of each person’s guardian angel, and many other Christians simply thank God for the angels He sends. This prayer is for children at bedtime or in the morning, and for anyone who wants to remember that God watches over them.
