Grace Before Meals

Psalm 145:15-16

Psalm 145:15-16 is from a psalm of praise by David, in which he praises God as the One who cares for every living thing, giving food in its season and satisfying every creature from His open hand.

Lord, the eyes of all look to You, and You give us our food in season. You open Your hand and fill this table. Thank You for this meal and for each person here. Bless our food, bless our time together, and help us remember those who have less. Amen.

About this verse

Psalm 145 is David’s song of praise to God as King. Halfway through, it turns from God’s greatness to His care: “The LORD upholds all who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down.” Then come these two verses: “The eyes of all look to You, and You give them their food in season. You open Your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing.” The picture is of every creature waiting on God, and God answering with an open hand. Christians have long prayed these verses as a table grace, and it is easy to see why. They are short, they name exactly what is happening at a meal, and they turn a plate of food into a reason to praise. This prayer is a short family grace to say together at the table, with children or guests.
