Joshua 1 opens right after Moses' death, with Joshua now responsible for leading Israel into the promised land — a task Moses himself never finished. Three times in this chapter God tells Joshua to 'be strong and courageous,' and this verse gives the reason underneath the command: not raw willpower, but the LORD's presence wherever he goes. Joshua had spent forty years watching Moses lead; now the weight was his, with an untested people and unconquered land ahead. The command to be brave is paired with a promise, not a pep talk. This prayer is for the moment a new responsibility lands on you and you feel underqualified to carry it.
