Strength & Courage

Saint Michael the Archangel

Catholic Prayer

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

The Scripture

“Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.”

About this verse

The Prayer to Saint Michael was composed by Pope Leo XIII in 1886 and was recited after Low Mass throughout the Catholic world for nearly a century. It calls on Michael the Archangel — named in Daniel, Jude, and Revelation as the angelic prince who 'fought against the dragon' — to defend the faithful in spiritual battle. Unlike most petitions, this prayer assumes conflict: it names an enemy, asks for protection in the fight rather than escape from it, and places the outcome under God's power ('may God rebuke him'). Many Catholics pray it daily; many parishes have restored it after Mass. It is a soldier's prayer for anyone who senses that some struggles are more than flesh and blood.
