“David said to the Philistine, 'You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts.' And David ran quickly toward the battle line and struck the Philistine and killed him; there was no sword in the hand of David.”

1 Samuel 17 tells of a standoff in the Valley of Elah, where the Philistine army camped opposite Israel's forces with a champion, Goliath, taunting them to send a single warrior. David, still a shepherd boy too young for the army, was there only to deliver food to his brothers. Every trained soldier, including King Saul, stayed in the ranks, but David volunteered — refusing armor that wasn't his and relying instead on a sling and the same faith that had already carried him through defending his flock from lions and bears. His words to Goliath make the point of the whole story explicit: he came not in his own strength but in the name of the Lord of hosts. This is a prayer for facing an opponent, obstacle, or fear that looks far bigger and stronger than you are.
